Why WeRunWithYou

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. ~Lao Tzu …and apparently many falls To better understand why I wanted to create WeRunWithYou, we have to rewind time a few years. You see, three years ago my life forever changed. In the midst of enjoying time with my family in California, I collapsed and slipped into a coma. Unbeknownst to anyone at the time, an aneurism along my vertebral artery had burst causing a subarachnoid hemorrhage, which caused my brain and body to simply shutdown…

Marathon Lessons

When I signed up to run the Philadelphia Marathon in 2019, my friend Kathy Nguyen, co-founder of We Run with You, gave me a stretchy bracelet that said, “It isn’t easy, but it’s worth it.” I wrote about my intention to run that marathon in an earlier post for WRWY, where I talked about “finding my why” for doing it. Well, I guess my why wasn’t as strong as I thought it was three years ago because that marathon never happened for me.

But I did keep the bracelet.

Running Isn’t Over Until We Say It Is

Running Isn’t Over Until We Say It Is

I’ve been at this a while now – both running and life. There have now been three events in my life that shocked and froze the world. For the first two of those events, the world stopped, but runners didn’t. We held onto the sport that we love to provide a routine and release at a time when everything around us was upside down. The crisis before us may be the toughest challenge of all. But we are runners, we don’t live in our fears – we live in our dreams. We don’t run just for fun – we run to live. Running isn’t over until we say it is over.

It's Enough

It’s Enough

It’s a cold Sunday morning right after Halloween. I run 3.5 miles on a paved trail that follows the railroad tracks in our college town.
I tell myself it’s enough.

Later in the day, if it warms up enough, I may do an 8.5-mile bike ride on a quiet old road that runs through a park at the north end of town.

I will tell myself it’s enough.

Injuries and Motivation

Injuries and Motivation

Injury – Now what?
It’s a runner’s worst fear. It is the dream stealer, self-esteem buster, mental health shaker, and loneliness invader. Why don’t we talk more about the emotions around it? Fear of being weak? Too negative? Not looking on the “bright side” of things? Three years ago, I was sidelined by an IT band injury that forced me to step down from training for the Via Marathon. I faced three months of physical therapy, not running, managing some serious emotions, I felt awfully lonely throughout that process.

Be Brave Like Gabe

A little known story: when I was 19, I never made it to the start line of the first Ironman I had ever signed up for. (And yes, I do realize how strange even that statement is–to be signed up for an Ironman at age 19! Perhaps a longer story for another time.)
It was May of 2001. This was back when Ironman California was still a full Ironman at Camp Pendleton, the US Marine Corps base just outside of San Diego and about 80 miles south of my college.

Sharing Knowledge and Inspiration

I am an international medical graduate from Latvia currently having the honor to pursue my research interests in cerebrovascular neurosurgery at the USC Center for Neurorestoration under the mentorship of Dr. Jonathan Russin. Early on after joining the USC Neurorestoration center, I learned the great dedication and connection Dr. Russin has with his patients reaching well beyond surgery and clinical care. The Neuro ICU-to-26.2 LA Marathon fundraising event inspired by the unique story of Kathy Nguyen has been one of the greatest highlights during my time at the USC Center for Neurorestoration so far.
